Catherine Rosalind Russell (Waterbury, Connecticut, 4 de junio de 1907 – Los Ángeles, 28 de noviembre de 1976) fue una actriz, comediante, guionista y cantante[2] estadounidense, que se hizo conocida por su papel como la reportera Hildy Johnson en la comedia His Girl Friday (1940) de Howard Hawks, así como por sus interpretaciones de Mame Dennis en Auntie Mame (1958) y Rose en Gypsy (1962). Una destacada comediante,[3] ganó los cinco Globos de Oro por los que fue nominada, además de obtener un premio Tony a la mejor actriz en un musical por su interpretación de Ruth en el espectáculo de Broadway Wonderful Town en 1953 (un musical basado en la película My Sister Eileen, que también protagonizó). Fue nominada para el Premio Óscar a la Mejor Actriz cuatro veces a lo largo de su carrera, obteniendo posteriormente el Premio Humanitario Jean Hersholt.
Además de su fama como comediante, Russell era conocida por interpretar papeles mujeres adineradas, dignas y femeninas, así como por ser una de las pocas actrices de su época que actuaba regularmente en roles de mujeres profesionales, como jueces, periodistas y psiquiatras.[4] Tuvo una gran carrera desde la década de 1930 hasta la de 1970, y atribuyó su larga carrera al hecho de que, aunque por lo general desempeñaba papeles elegantes y glamorosos, nunca se convirtió en símbolo sexual.[5]
